CATARACT
Please read the OVERVIEW section first.
Cataract is cloudiness of the internal lens of the eye. This lens should be clear to make a nice clear picture. If you imagine the lens of a camera, the picture will be hazy or foggy if the lens is dirty. The clouding of the lens in the eye can also produce blurry vision, blocked vision, glare, haloes around lights, or even multiple images. This is caused by scattering of light that hits the cloudy areas of the lens or cataract. Sometimes, surgery may be necessary to remove this cataract when it causes significant impairment of activities of daily living such as reading, driving, writing checks, watching TV, etc. Surgery involves opening the eye, removing the cataract and putting a plastic implant in its place to help focus. Usually, a film of scar tissue (Posterior Capsular Opacification) will form in this area sometime after cataract surgery. When this impairs those same activities of daily living described with Cataracts - the .YAG. or .cold laser. is used to permanently destroy this opacification.
Cataracts can occur for many reasons:
1] Aging is the most common cause of Cataract;
2] The use of steroids (like Prednisone) in any form (pills, intravenous, eye drops, skin creams, or nasal sprays) for many diseases (Asthma, Emphysema, COPD, Allergies, Uveitis, Arthritis, etc) can cause a special kind of Cataract (usually a Posterior Subcapsular Cataract);
3] Head or Eye Injuries (including surgery inside the eye) can cause shock waves, irritation, inflammation or direct contact with the interior lens of the eye which can result in Cataract;
4] Congenital Cataracts are found in babies as a birth defect or due to certain diseases of metabolism or genetic disorders;
5] Exposure to certain medicines, radiation, and ultraviolet light (the Sun) can also cause Cataracts.
