CATARACT
The eye, much like a camera, contains a lens which helps to focus light on the retina. Throughout life, changes gradually occur in the proteins that make up the lens, causing it to become increasingly cloudy. When the lens becomes cloudy enough to affect vision, it is referred to as a cataract. Cataract formation is, therefore, part of the natural maturing process of the eye. In some cases, cataracts may form earlier in life, especially in association with certain diseases or the use of certain medications. Rarely, people may be born with them.
Symptoms of cataracts usually include blurred vision, increased difficulty reading, and glare. Glare is often especially troubling for people when driving at night, in the rain, or on a very bright day. Symptoms may range from mild annoyance to true disability as the cataracts progress in severity. People often ask if their cataracts are ready to be removed, but, in most cases, the timing is up to the patient. Cataracts almost never need to be removed simply because they are present, but rather because they have begun to interfere with a person.s daily activities.
The treatment of cataracts is with surgery. Today, this is done on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia, and, in most cases, without sutures. The cataract can be removed through a very small incision through the use of an ultrasound device that breaks it up into small pieces. An artificial lens implant is then inserted to replace the focusing power of the natural lens that was removed. Patients are usually able to return to most of their normal activities within a day or two.
In order to determine whether cataracts are present, and whether or not surgery is appropriate, a thorough eye examination by an ophthalmologist is necessary. Feel free to contact Capital Eye Care with any questions you may have.
