Common Eye Diseases :: Macular Degeneration
MACULAR DEGENERATION

Please read the OVERVIEW first.

The Retina is the film in the eye like the film in a camera. If the film goes bad . the picture goes bad. Unfortunately, in the eye, the film (Retina) can not be replaced with a new roll. The middle part of the Retina is called the Macula. In some people, the Macula no longer functions properly or degenerates with aging. This is called Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD). This is one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly. The blindness caused by ARMD only involves the middle part of vision. But, this is disabling because the middle area of vision allows one to drive, read, watch TV, recognize faces, write checks, etc.

There are two main types of ARMD: Dry and Wet. In Dry ARMD there is no bleeding in the Macula. In the wet form there is bleeding or blood vessels leak causing drastic, often rapid, changes in vision.

There is no treatment for ARMD. Taking Multivitamin supplements daily with Zinc and possibly Lutein and maintaining excellent health and good nutrition may retard the disease.

The bleeding and damage from bleeding caused by Wet ARMD can be slowed down or sometimes reversed with laser sealing of the sick leaky blood vessels or with several new chemicals and devices that show much promise.

Patients with scarred or degenerated Maculas may benefit from .Low Vision Aids.. These are special lenses, magnifiers, gadgets and devices that can improve the functioning of patients with significant vision loss from the disease.
