Ophthalmology is the medical and surgical care of the eye, the area around the
eye and the entire visual system. An Ophthalmologist is a medical doctor
(M.D.) and surgeon. Ophthalmologists receive the degree, M.D., after attending
four years of medical school. During this time, the future Ophthalmologist
studies the anatomy, physiology & pathology of every organ system in the body
and spends time in each specialty from Internal Medicine to General Surgery
learning medical & surgical care of different disease processes. After
medical school a year of internship in Internal Medicine and/or general
surgery further consolidates the Ophthalmologist's knowledge of medical &
surgical care of patients.
The Ophthalmologist then spends three years in Ophthalmology Residency. During
this period the Ophthalmologist learns the specifics of medical and surgical
care of the eye, the tissue area of the face around the eyes and the entire
visual system. The Ophthalmologist learns specifics in the use of medicine,
surgery and lasers to treat diseases of the cornea, the lens, the retina, the
optic nerve, eye muscles, Glaucoma, the eyelids, tear ducts and bones around
the eye (Plastic Surgery).
After these eight years of training the Ophthalmologist takes the Board
Certification examination with the National Board of Medical Examiners and is
qualified to practice medicine and surgery.
